Today I was talking over text to a client about how he has recently struggled horribly with his game and the progress we had made together over the last 8 months seems to have disappeared. When he and I met, he was a 32 in February. In June, he was down to a 21. But since then, he has gone back up to a 24.
Today I mentioned that we all have struggled. There are bumps in the road in life. Family, friends, associates, business, etc.
He said “but you are a pro. You can hit good shots whenever you want, you still shoot par and you haven’t played in 3 years.” Well. That is partially true.
I can hit some shots that many good players can not hit on command.
But what’s more important about this game is what I did to get here.
I have struggled as much as any good ball striker/professional player has. I’ve shanked at least 1000 shots in my career and shanked at least 25 in competition where there was some money on the line.
I’ve broken at least 100 clubs in anger back in the day.
The reality is we all have struggled to become the masters we are. I have played 2 PGA Tour qualifying schools with no success beyond stage 1.
What does that mean?

It means I was there. Like many other great playing pros who are now teaching golf. It means that everything was on the line. It means back then we wrote a big check to get in with 3 pga references and a healthy playing background resume.
To be in that place is like none other IMO and it’s not even what a person experiences on Tour.
The pressure is OFF THE CHARTS.
So when my amateur golfers struggle, I just share with them that I’ve been there. The struggle is real when your desire is to become a 5 handicap and your a 25 handicap now. If you want to stick with the journey, it’s a day by day process and one swing at a time.
Our goals need to align. Once they do, you will improve faster. If you continue, as the student, to have goals different than mine, your journey will take longer. #jameskylepga #jameskylegolfacademy #tampabay
